Odometer Repair

Three causes for early 944 odometer failure.

	The red gear breaks.
	The red gear slides to the side and no longer meshes with the white worm gear.
	The first metal advance gear (gold color in photo) is sliding. It needs to be firmly crimped to the shaft.

The original odometer gear is made of red nylon. The hole in it is smaller than the shaft. This holds it in place on the shaft. It also puts a constant stress on the gear itself. With age, the nylon material becomes brittle and this is enough to make the gear material crack.

"I pushed my Odometer reset button while the car was moving. Is my Odometer going to break?" No, Don't be stupid! The odometer reset has nothing to do with it. This is one of those nonsense statements that perpetuates and has no basis in fact.
